Dr. Walter Malone, Jr. is pastor/founder of Canaan Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Beginning in 1983 with 97 believers and no place to call home, Canaan is now one of the fastest growing congregations in the Kentuckiana area, with forty-five hundred disciples. Now, to the glory of God, the Canaan Christian Church worship center sits on 22 acres of land and has 125,000 square ft of space in two buildings. The sanctuary seats 2500, along with a 200 seat Chapel, a 300 seat Amphitheatre, a Fellowship Hall and full Family Life Center. The Canaan Christian Church is dedicated to promoting the gospel of Jesus Christ through evangelistic outreach, family enrichment, economic empowerment, educational excellence, and community involvement.


Dr. Malone is a native of Nashville, Tennessee where he attended Fisk University and later American Baptist College - from which he earned a B.A. in Theology. He holds a Master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, and a Doctorate of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

During his doctoral program, Dr. Malone developed and launched a program with a mission to make life more livable for others: Canaan Community Development Corporation (CCDC). After more than thirteen years, CCDC continues to foster social and economic empowerment in distressed communities to help families rebuild their neighborhoods and create vibrant communities. CCDC is involved in housing development, job readiness training, computer literacy, GED preparation and various educational and social programs.

In May of 2006, Dr. Malone launched a vision, through CCDC, that would bring about a visible and viable transformation in the Louisville community…”Destiny”. The purpose of “Destiny” is to equip the community for social and economic empowerment in the areas of Economics, Education, Health and the eradication of Violence.

Recognized and respected around the country as a noted preacher, teacher and lecturer, Dr. Malone has traveled extensively throughout the nation sharing the Word of God and blessing the lives of people.

Dr. Malone has received many honors and awards marking his accomplishments and contributions locally and beyond, including recognition in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, Outstanding Young Man of America, 1982 and 1989, Delta Epsilon Honor Society and Theta Epsilon Honor Society. He was awarded the Mayor’s Citation and Distinguished Citizen Award – 1991-Mayor Jerry E. Abramson, Louisville, KY, and the 1995 Black Achievers Award. He is affiliated with the NAACP, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., the Southern Baptist Convention and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Dr. Malone is former president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Coalition in Louisville.

Currently Dr. Malone serves on the Board of Trustees for the American Baptist College in Nashville. He is the author of three books; An Operative Faith for an Oppressed People, From Holy Power to Holy Profits, and Let’s Have Church – which outlines, through twelve principles, specific deeds that must be embraced if the church is to be “credible and authentic.”

Dr. Malone resides in Louisville with his wife Sandra, Minister of Counseling at Canaan, and son, Walter III, Church Administrator.
